Resume of Peter L. LaMontagne P.E.

EXPERIENCE:

Peter is an independent consultant for centrifuges. His focus is on Operator Training Programs, plant optimization, and application engineering for centrifuges. He is a Sponsor of wastewater certification courses in California, Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia. The first course he developed is Cost Effective Centrifugation, the optimization of thickening and dewatering centrifuges. Over fourteen states currently accept this course for 6.5 hours of credit towards maintenance of operating certificates. A specialty course is Centrifuge Design and Operation, for those with a more technical interest.

Projects in recent years: centrifuge schools in Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ontario, and British Columbia.

As an option to The Centrifuge School, in the days following the class room portion, Mr. LaMontagne divides the students into small groups, and supervises them as they practice the optimization skills learned in the school. The plant receives a full report, detailing the findings. Boston (Deer Island), Chicago (Stickney), and Columbia County Georgia among others, elected this program. Other work include Process optimization, automation of centrifuges in conjunction with Alpine Technology, field testing, industrial process development projects, consulting on centrifuge repairs and upgrades, and brokerage of used centrifuges.

Mr. LaMontagne writes extensively on wastewater topics. The lead Author for both the thickening and the Dewatering chapters for the WEF Manuals of Practice revision, he also regularly publishes articles on automation and operational matters in the Water, Environment & Technology journal of the WEF. He is a member of the Professional Development Committee, Plant Operations and Maintenance Committee, and Residuals Committee WEF.

Mr. LaMontagne had over 20 years of experience with Sharples/Alfa Laval. As technical Manager, he was responsible for the process development of the PM and DS series of centrifuges used at hundreds of wastewater treatment plants in the US and abroad. He has completed startup and optimization on many of the P, PM, XM, DS series of decanter centrifuges made by Alfa Laval Sharples. During his tenure at Sharples/Alfa Laval, Mr. LaMontagne's career included the following highlights:

  • Improved Alfa Laval’s internal competency by writing a series of handbooks on Polymer Usage, Centrifuge Operation, Heating Sludge, Limed Sludge, Centrifuge Theory, and Ready Reference Data Sheets. Conducted training programs for Alfa Laval/Sharples service personnel, as well as Alfa Laval centrifuge engineers from all parts of the world
  • Conducted thickening and dewatering process evaluations and training programs in; Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Australia, Korea, Malaysia, China, (Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan), Austria, France Greece, and Dubai. Conducted operator training programs and supervised waste water plant startups in Hong Kong and Singapore.
  • Saved the company from enormous process penalties by supporting the field service technicians. If the field service people could not meet the guarantee, Mr. LaMontagne would analyze the plant operation, the polymer system, and the centrifuge operation. In all cases, he was able to improve the centrifuge performance sufficiently to meet the contract requirements. This saved his company, and the centrifuge owner enormous amounts of money.
  • Lead the commercial development of the first large thickening centrifuges in wastewater treatment.
  • Developed improved proprietary torque control and dry solids centrifuge design for Alfa Laval / Sharples that remains state of the art today.

Mr. LaMontagne left Alfa Laval several years ago on friendly terms.
